At an event recently we were challenged to come up with a small bracket of Sparkling wine. The challenge? No Champagne and no Prosecco. The results? Ecstatic tasters. We have 3 Alt-Fizz beauties that constitute some of the wine worlds best kept secrets.
Gabriele Scaglione Alta Langa NV is from Piedmont, and grapes grown alongside the Nebbiolo grapes destined for uber-famous red; Barolo. Chardonnay and Pinot Nero (Noir), it is made the same as Champagne and offers huge depth and concentration. Oh yeah - it just so happens to be vintage too! 2017!
Domaine du Vieux Pressoir Brut NV is Crémant de Loire. This sparkling from the Loire, also made the same way as Champagne is less of a secret with wine lovers. We love the wine, it is elegant and supple, less austere than Champagne and just a hell of a lot of fun to drink!
Lastly Cava Valle de Sanjaume Brut is Organic Cava from Valencia. Made from Chardonnay and Macabeo, in the traditional Champagne method, it's got great freshness, but a bit of lees ageing for some richness.
