Tuscany
Tuscany is Sangiovese country. Chianti Classico is the epicentre of production, though other areas in the sourrounds are also producing great wines. Brunello di Montalcino is an alternative to Barolo in that it requires 4 years of age and produces powerful, deep, age worthy wines. The so called Super Tuscan wines of the coast in Bolgheri and Maremma are made with international varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet with Sangiovese. Very little white made, just the very basic Trebbiano.
