Piedmont
Piedmont contains Italy's most famous and sought after wine, Barolo, made from Nebbiolo. Barbaresco is similar if a little more approachable in youth. There are several of Nebbiolo denominations such as Roero, Langhe and Valtellina. Barbera, the workhorse red variety has become an alternative, as has Dolcetto. Arneis is a white variety getting popular, while Gavi is the famous white style of the region, made from Cortese. Alta Langa Champagne-method sparkling is also coming up.
