The chief component in Rioja, Tempranillo is found across Spain in a wide variety or styles, weights and wine making methods from young light to oaky and heavy. Tempranillo is mid weight in acidity, tannin and alcohol, amenable to blending with a number of bedfellows, loves a bit of oak but is happy without and is generally delicious! It straddles the red fruit spectrum. Rioja is it’s most famous expression, but increasingly popular is the showy & flambouyant examples from Ribera Del Duero.
These are quite frankly, all bangers. Iselen Tinto is an introduction, Letargo Joven and Crianza introduce you to old school Rioja. The twin towers for value in the region, Aradon Momento & Calzadas show different sides of the coin in a more modern take, while the Arrocal Village is from Ribera del Duero and the Tinta Pais clone of the grape. Killer value too!
