Albarino
Pronounced (Alba-REE-no) gorgeously textural but high acid white grape with a certain saltiness found in Rias Biaxas in the North West of Spain, fabulous summer white. Seems to be taking over the world the last couple years.
Why has it become so popular?
Previously the Spanish used to hoover most of it up themselves and it was Spain's best kept secret, it now seems to be having a moment as one of the cool wines, as people discover it's joys and versatility. It's kind of a halfway house between Chenin Blanc which has a little body and texture, and Sauvignon Blanc which is very dry with fresh acidity. It shows lovely plump fruit, but is totally dry and savoury with even a hint of saltiness.
Where is it made?
It is native to Rias Baixas, in Galicia, North West Spain. This is the North West area also known as Green Spain because the Atlantic breeze and rain produces lush flora. This climatic condition also produces lovely, fresh, savoury, buzzy wines - especially Albarino!
What have we got on WineStation?
Our most popular training wheel Albarino is O Profundo Albarino, showing all of that perfect fresh salinity. Things get more serious with Raxeira Albarino, and then Ledes Albarino is barrel aged, showing that Albarino can take a bit of oak, Chardonnay style!
