Big Macs & Burgundy
In a recent Tip Station on matching, people loved the wacky combos, so we’ve come up with more. We have put together a 6-Pack of super classic wine styles to go against these foods. Take outs, junk food, crisps, nachos they are all here, and crucially they are all superb matches with a great price on the 6-Pack so you can try ‘em all!
1/ KFC Fried Chicken & Vieux Pressoir Cremant de Loire NV
Champenoise-method Sparkling, better value than Champagne. The bubbles cut through and clean all the fat and grease. This match is elite. Bubbles & a snack box.
Serving suggestion: why not dress up for this one?
Other offbeat matches are Chicken Kiev & good old Fish n Chips
2/ Any Radioactive Crisp or Corn Chip & Idiart Loire Sauvignon Blanc
Radioactive crisp can be Chili Dorito, Monster Munch, Meanies. Acid in wine is like salt in foods, loads of both here. There’s a good bit of texture in this Sancerre style Sauv, mixed with the acid, helps to chisel the corn mush off the roof of your mouth.
Serving suggestion: a plethora of radioactive crisps and corn snacks
Other awesome match - Mexican food!
3/ Spicy Chicken Wings with Franks Hot Sauce & Karl Koch Weg & Weisse Riesling
I try to have this once a week. Doesn’t have to be Franks, but spicy sauce is ideally matched with a Riesling with a lower alcohol/delicate pinch of sweetness. Together they cool the palate and intensify the flavour of each component.
Serving suggestion: stemless glasses so you can drink without the use of finger tips (told you I was experienced)
Other Rizza (Riesling) matches: Chinese take away - amazing stuff!
4/ Big Mac & Domaine Saint Cyr Beaujolais
This is amazing, we won’t try litigate what the sauce is, or whether that is in fact actual beef from an actual cow, but the tangy, puckering Big Mac sauce and fatty fake beef goes amazingly with the raspy, acidic Gamay fruit in the Beaujolais.
Serving suggestion: feeling fancy? Go Big Mac & (young) Burgundy.
Other serious Bojo matches: lay out a sea of charcuterie, it just goes with it ALL!
5/ LOADED Nachos & Pavette Zinfandel
Both Nachos and Zin would suggest that it’s party time, scatter out the nachos, load em up with whatever and then get them under the grill. The unruly energy of Zinfandel keeps in touch with the variety of intense flavours in whatever you put on.
Serving suggestion: make some Chili to dump on top
Other Zin pair: Chili and Zin on rice, or even better, baked potato with mature cheddar and creme fraiche.
6/ Lasagna & Ghostwriter Syrah
Lasagna is a surprisingly hard match for a straight forward meal with its melted fatty cheese, acidic tomato sauce and beef. Syrah, more particularly a new world, juicy number will work, this one from Kenny Likitprakong hits all the marks.
Serving suggestion: drink and eat over 2 nights - see if both are better next night.
Other Syrah signatures: Black pudding - OMG. Also haggis if you can cook it or have a Scot handy.
